Vehicle Technician / Vehicle Mechanic (NVQ Level 2 or Level 3) – Progress Your Career in Defence Programme will begin January 2027

The Role

We are looking for qualified Vehicle Mechanics, Vehicle Technicians, Automotive Technicians, Light Vehicle Technicians and Motor Vehicle Technicians with an NVQ Level 2 or Level 3 qualification to join our Vehicle Mechanic Development Programme at Ashchurch, Tewkesbury.

This is an excellent opportunity for candidates currently working in automotive dealerships, independent garages, fleet maintenance, commercial vehicle workshops or transport operators who are looking to develop their careers working on military and heavy vehicles. As an NVQ Level 2 or Level 3 qualified Vehicle Mechanic, you will combine practical, hands-on experience with a formal learning programme to progress towards becoming a fully qualified Heavy Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician. You will work on a wide range of military vehicles, developing skills that are highly valued across the defence, automotive and engineering sectors.

Day-to-day, you will:

  • Carry out vehicle servicing, maintenance, inspections, fault diagnosis and repair on a variety of military and heavy vehicles
  • Use diagnostic equipment and fault-finding techniques to identify and rectify mechanical and electrical faults
  • Conduct preventative maintenance, component replacement and vehicle repair activities
  • Use hand tools, workshop equipment and technical documentation safely and accurately
  • Interpret engineering drawings and technical information to meet specification
  • Produce clear maintenance records, service reports and inspection documentation
  • Work collaboratively within a team while following health, safety and quality standards
  • Attend off-site academic training three days per week for the first six months, alongside practical experience at your home site

The role is based on site at Ashchurch, with set working hours of 37 hours per week. Occasional travel to other Babcock and customer sites will be required as part of your development.

Essential Experience and Qualifications

  • Demonstrated aptitude and understanding of mechanical or electrical engineering principles
  • Ability to diagnose faults and carry out vehicle maintenance and repair activities safely and effectively
  • Ability to work methodically and accurately when following instructions
  • Effective teamwork and communication skills
  • Confidence using IT systems for reporting and communication
  • NVQ Level 2 or Level 3 in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair, Light Vehicle Maintenance, Motor Vehicle Maintenance, Automotive Engineering or equivalent qualification
  • City & Guilds, IMI or equivalent recognised vehicle maintenance qualification welcome.

Candidates from car, van, fleet, HGV, commercial vehicle, agricultural, plant, military vehicle and PSV maintenance backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
