Lead radiological protection that safeguards people, submarines and national security

As a Senior Health Physicist, you’ll provide expert radiological protection advice that directly supports the safe delivery of major submarine deep maintenance periods. You’ll play a vital role in upholding radiation safety standards across the Devonport site, ensuring compliance with legislation and enabling engineering teams, project managers and operational specialists to work safely and effectively.
Day-to-day, you’ll work with multiple functions, support the oversight and continuous improvement of health physics arrangements, and act as a recognised subject matter expert. It’s an ideal opportunity to develop your technical authority, consultancy skills and leadership capability within one of the UK’s most important defence environments.
- Supporting the implementation, oversight and continuous improvement of health and safety performance within the section.
- Ensuring Health Physics standards are consistently maintained and continuously improved where practicable.
- Assisting the Principal Health Physicist to ensure personnel are competent and suitably qualified and experienced (SQEP).
- Overseeing, developing and managing staff training and professional development activities.
- Acting as a recognised technical radiological protection expert, providing consultancy input to one or more major projects.
This role is full time, 35 hours per week and is based on site at Devonport Royal Dockyard.
Essential experience of the Senior Health Physicist
- Relevant Health Physics experience or other closely related professional experience.
- Experience conducting radiological risk assessments (beneficial).
- IT literacy, including strong MS Office proficiency.
- Strong stakeholder engagement and relationship‑building skills.
- Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly and confidently across diverse teams (implied).
Qualifications for the Senior Health Physicist
- Science degree or equivalent relevant experience.
- Radiation Protection Postgraduate Diploma, MSc, or suitable equivalent.
Security Clearance
The successful candidate must be a sole UK National who is able to achieve and maintain Naval Nuclear Propulsion Information (NNPPI) security clearance for this role.
