This 4-year apprenticeship is a fantastic opportunity to begin a career in nuclear science while earning an Applied Chemistry Foundation Degree. Throughout the programme, you’ll work alongside industry professionals, contribute to meaningful real-world projects, and play an important role in advancing the field of nuclear science.

About the programme

As a Science Apprentice, you'll be at the forefront of innovative scientific work at our Greeson Court facility in Cumbria. From day one, you'll gain practical experience working in a specialist radio-analytical laboratory, developing an in-depth understanding of the scientific processes and laboratory techniques that are essential to the nuclear industry.

Each day will bring something new, from conducting vital scientific and technical activities to supporting research, analysis, and testing on real-world projects. You'll be trained to use advanced laboratory equipment, analyse data, and apply radio-analytical techniques that help drive critical developments in the field. Working alongside experienced scientists and technicians, you’ll collaborate on high-impact projects that make a difference in the sector.

This apprenticeship is an opportunity to learn a diverse range of scientific methodologies, helping you gain valuable hands-on experience while working as part of a supportive and dynamic team. By the end of the programme, you’ll have developed the expertise and confidence to progress within the industry, setting you on the path toward a rewarding career in nuclear science.

Your education/training

You will work towards the Level 5 Technician Scientist Apprenticeship Standard. Alongside your role, you’ll study part-time at Lakes College West Cumbria, attending one day per week, to complete an Applied Chemistry Foundation Degree awarded by the University of Cumbria. Accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry, the programme ensures your qualification meets the highest industry standards.

Through the Foundation Degree in Applied Chemistry, you’ll complete modules designed to challenge and inspire you, combining theory with hands-on experimentation. You’ll develop systematic knowledge and practical skills across diverse branches of chemistry – including nuclear, polymer, environmental, and medicinal. You’ll benefit from laboratory-based learning, supported by small-group lectures and tutorials. To enrich your experience, you may have opportunities to engage with industry speakers, attend guest lectures, and take part in site visits that bring real-world context to your studies.

Future prospects

Upon completing your apprenticeship, you will step into the role of Level 1 Analyst at Greeson Court Laboratory, joining a dedicated analytical team committed to delivering efficient, high-quality services to our customers.

From there, your development doesn’t stop. Through the Babcock Role Framework, you’ll have a clear view of how your career can progress, with mapped-out pathways, development opportunities and the tools you need to get wherever you want to go.

What you’ll need

  • Minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade 4 (C) or above, including Maths, English and Science.
  • 2 A Levels including Chemistry and either Physics or another STEM subject, or an equivalent science-based Level 3 qualification, e.g. BTEC or T-Level qualification.
  • Many of our apprenticeship programmes are subject to Security Clearance and Trade Control restrictions which mean that your place of birth, nationality, citizenship, or residency you hold or have held may impact which programmes you are eligible for. For this programme, you must be able to achieve Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) and Security Check (SC) clearance.
