The role

As aConfined Space Coordinator, you’ll take on a safety-critical position at the heart of our Submarine Business Unit. Working across a complex nuclear environment, you’ll coordinate all confined space activities, ensuring the highest standards of safety, compliance and operational excellence.

This is a fast-paced and highly dynamic role where no two days are the same. You’ll collaborate with multiple teams to enable essential defence projects, supporting the delivery and maintenance of critical submarine programmes. Alongside this, you’ll benefit from a structured training and development programme designed to support your long-term career growth.

Day-to-day, you’ll be required to:

  • Coordinate confined space activities, ensuring safe systems of work are in place and followed
  • Manage the confined space entry control system and maintaining accurate status records
  • Organise site controls including ventilation, lighting, scaffolding, gas monitoring equipment and rescue support
  • Support risk assessments and advising on hazard controls alongside health and safety teams
  • Ensure atmospheric testing and certification are completed before work is authorised

This is a full-time, onsite role based at Devonport Royal Dockyard. The position follows OWP Pattern 1, which includes a rotating schedule of day and back shifts, with one weekend in every four worked as part of the standard shift pattern.

Essential experience of the Confined Space Coordinator

  • Demonstrating knowledge of confined space risks and relevant safety legislation
  • Understanding permit-to-work systems and safe working practices in controlled environments
  • Experience operating within a Safe System of Work framework
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, complex operational setting
  • Strong communication skills with experience coordinating multiple stakeholders

Qualifications for the Confined Space Coordinator

  • Functional Skills Level 2 in English
  • Functional Skills Level 2 in Information and Communications Technology
  • Authorised Gas Tester certification – Desirable
  • IOSH or equivalent health and safety training – Desirable
  • Risk assessment training – Desirable
  • Confined space working qualifications (low, medium or high risk) - Desirable

Security Clearance

The successful candidate must be a sole UK National who is able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) and Baseline Personal Security Standard (BPSS) security clearance for this role.
