Vehicle Mechanic (NVQ Level 2) – Progress Your Career in Defence

The Role

As an NVQ Level 2 Qualified Vehicle Mechanic, you will combine practical, hands‑on experience with a formal learning program to progress towards becoming a fully qualified Heavy Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician. You will work on a wide range of military vehicles, developing skills that are highly valued across the defence and engineering sectors.

Day‑to‑day, you will:

  • Carry out servicing, maintenance, fault diagnosis, and repair on a variety of heavy and military vehicles
  • Use hand tools, diagnostic equipment, and technical documentation safely and accurately
  • Interpret engineering drawings and technical information to meet specification
  • Produce clear written reports detailing inspections, servicing, and remedial work
  • Work collaboratively within a team while following health, safety, and quality standards
  • Attend off‑site academic training three days per week for the first six months, alongside practical experience at your home site

The role is based on site at Bovington, with set working hours of 37 hours per week. Occasional travel to other Babcock and customer sites will be required as part of your development.

Essential Experience and Qualifications

  • Demonstrated aptitude and understanding of mechanical or electrical engineering principles
  • Ability to work methodically and accurately when following instructions
  • Effective teamwork and communication skills
  • Confidence using IT systems for reporting and communication
  • Minimum Level 2 qualification in Light Vehicle Maintenance (or equivalent)

Security Clearance

The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.
