Create training that shapes the future of national defence

At Babcock we’re working to create a safe and secure world, together, and if you join us, you can play your part as a Training Designer at our Devonport Royal Dockyard site.

The role

As a Training Designer, you’ll play a crucial role in transforming how the technical workforce across Devonport develops the skills needed to maintain complex defence assets such as submarines and warships. This is a rare opportunity to influence how an entire industrial workforce is trained, accelerating time to competence, shaping future capability, and contributing directly to national security.

Day-to-day, you’ll be working within a newly established and highly innovative team as part of the People Capability Enhancement Programme (PCEP). It’s an exciting environment with a real sense of purpose—where your ideas and expertise will influence training solutions that support some of the UK’s most critical defence engineering programmes.

  • Support early design activities using a Systems Approach to Training (SAT).
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts to analyse role requirements and define core competencies.
  • Influence and shape effective training interventions for current and future workforce needs.
  • Determine component elements of competency profiles to support high‑quality training solutions.
  • Contribute to raising training standards and sustainable outcomes across the PCEP programme.

This role is full time, 35 hours per week and provides hybrid working arrangements with 4 days in the office/onsite and 1 day working from home.

Essential experience of the Training Designer

  • Training design and delivery experience, with the ability to use analysis to identify training needs.
  • Strong IT capability, including proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Relevant technical or business experience gained in a complex engineering or educational environment, with transferable experience considered.
  • Familiarity with compliance training requirements and training standards within regulated industries.
  • Experience in technical learning environments or exposure to defence or other highly regulated sectors - Desirable

Qualifications for the Training Designer

  • Minimum NVQ Level 3 / ONC in a technical discipline or similar.

Security Clearance

The successful candidate must be a sole UK National who is able to achieve and maintain Naval Nuclear Propulsion Information (NNPPI) security clearance for this role.

Many of the positions within our company are subject to national security clearance and Trade Control restrictions. This means that your eligibility for certain roles may be affected by your place of birth, nationality, current or former citizenship, and any residency you hold or have held.
