The role

As a Training and Competency Manager, you'll have the opportunity to build and lead a newly created function that will play a critical role in developing workforce capability across our specialist vehicle engineering business.

This is more than a training role. You'll be responsible for designing and delivering a long-term competency and qualifications strategy that ensures our people have the skills needed to support complex vehicle conversion, armouring, and modification programmes. Working closely with senior stakeholders, you'll identify skills gaps, develop qualification pathways, and create a sustainable skills pipeline that will support future business growth.

Day-to-day, you will be:

  • Developing qualification and competency pathways aligned to operational and business requirements by arranging nationally recognised vocational qualifications (Levels 1–3) across vehicle electrical, mechanical, coachbuilding and coded welding disciplines.
  • Managing vocational qualifications and apprenticeship programmes from enrolment through to successful completion.
  • Implementing and maintaining training systems, learner tracking, and competence assurance processes along with managing the training budget
  • Collaborating with operational leaders to identify skills gaps and deliver workforce development initiatives.
  • Supporting apprentices and employees through structured development programmes while ensuring compliance with relevant standards.

This role is based on site at Walsall, working 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday, with an early finish every Friday.

Essential experience of the Training and Competency Manager:

  • Strong leadership, mentoring, and people development capability.
  • Experience developing and managing training, competency, or workforce development programmes.
  • Ability to interpret and apply regulatory and compliance frameworks.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence and engage at all levels.
  • Commercial awareness and the ability to balance cost, value, and risk.

Qualifications for the Training and Competency Manager:

  • NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in a relevant engineering or technical discipline.
  • Assessor qualification such as A1 or CAVA.
  • Internal Quality Assurer qualification (V1/IQA), or willingness to obtain this qualification with support from Babcock
