Write with purpose. Engineer with impact. Help keep the Royal Navy mission‑ready.

About Us

At Babcock, we’re working to create a safe and secure world, together. If you join us, you can play your part as an Electrical Technical Author at HM Naval Base Clyde (Faslane), near Helensburgh, Argyll and Bute. We deliver highly specialist engineering and infrastructure support at HMNB Clyde in partnership with the Ministry of Defence and the Royal Navy — work that underpins national defence and the availability of critical assets.

The role

As an Electrical Technical Author, you’ll transform complex maintenance and operating requirements into clear, concise procedures that technicians rely on every day. Your work will help ensure safe, compliant, planned and preventative maintenance across critical infrastructure — including nuclear safety implicated systems — supporting the Royal Navy’s operations and contributing to public protection. It’s a role with real purpose, offering breadth, responsibility and progression as you grow your technical writing, stakeholder engagement and engineering skills within a high‑performing team.

Day-to-day, you’ll have the following responsibilities:

  • Author clear electrical maintenance and operating procedures for planned and preventative maintenance.
  • Collaborate with maintenance engineers, design engineers, regulatory systems specialists and Health & Safety to capture the right steps, tools and controls.
  • Liaise with equipment manufacturers and contractors to verify technical detail and service information.
  • Ensure documentation meets applicable standards and supports safe, right‑first‑time execution.
  • Continuously review and improve procedures based on feedback, audits and lessons learned.

You’ll be working full-time, 36 hours per week, and is a hybrid role with a mixture of working from home and working based on site at our HMNB Clyde site.

Essential experience of the Technical Author:

  • Proven experience in electrical engineering and/or electrical maintenance.
  • Hands‑on use of maintenance instructions and/or operating procedures.
  • Ability to liaise with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong IT skills (authoring tools and MS Office).

Qualifications for the Infrastructure Technical Author:

  • Completed a recognised apprenticeship (electrical or closely related).
  • HNC (or higher) in a relevant discipline.
  • City & Guilds 18th Edition Wiring Regulations.
  • City & Guilds Level 3 — Inspection & Testing (or equivalent).

The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) clearance for this role.
