Shape the Future of the UK’s Submarine Capability.
At Babcock we’re working to create a safe and secure world, together, and if you join us, you can play your part as a Submarine Waterfront Representative at our Plymouth, Bristol, Cumbria, Leicester or Clyde site.
The role
As a Submarine Waterfront Representative (Platform Mechanical), you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. You’ll act as a vital conduit between the submarine waterfront, maintenance environments, and the shipbuilders designing the UK’s future submarine fleet. Your insight will help embed supportability and maintainability into design decisions from the earliest stages.
This is an exciting opportunity to influence long‑term engineering outcomes, reduce through‑life costs, improve submarine availability, and play a meaningful role in programmes critical to national security. You’ll work with senior stakeholders across industry, defence and engineering, while continuing to build your own professional credibility and technical breadth.
Day-to-day, you’ll be required to:
- Provide expert waterfront insight into submarine design to ensure future platforms are maintainable, supportable and safe
- Influence design decisions by identifying risks and opportunities that affect through‑life support and availability
- Engage with internal and external stakeholders, including shipbuilders, original equipment manufacturers and customers
- Contribute to supportability assessments, applying operational experience across multiple systems and disciplines
- Support programme-level decision making through clear communication and evidence-based engineering input.
This role is full time working 35 hours per week, based at any of our main Devonport locations including Plymouth, Bristol, Cumbria, Leicester or Clyde. Hybrid working patterns are available, with a minimum of working 2 days on site.
Essential experience of the Submarine Waterfront Representative:
- Substantial submarine waterfront experience across multiple maintenance or delivery programmes
- Strong understanding of submarine systems support, deep maintenance or commissioning environments
- Proven ability to work collaboratively within multi‑disciplinary engineering teams
- Experience influencing design or engineering decisions using operational insight
- Confidence engaging with industrial partners, shipbuilders or defence stakeholders
Qualifications for the Submarine Waterfront Representative:
- HND, Foundation Degree or equivalent qualification in an engineering discipline, or comparable experience
- Additional vocational or professional engineering qualifications would be advantageous
