At Babcock we’re working to create a safe and secure world, together, and if you join us, you can play your part as a Senior Mechanical Engineer - Building Services or Devonport Royal Dockyard site.

The role

As a Senior Mechanical Engineer - Building Services, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. It’s purposeful work in defence, aerospace and engineering where your expertise helps protect people and capability, while accelerating your development on high‑profile programmes such as the 10 Dock improvements at Devonport.

Day-to-day, you’ll lead mechanical building services design across complex dock and facility projects—from requirements capture and concept, through detailed design, implementation and close‑out, to through‑life support and decommissioning. You’ll deliver designs and substantiation that meet licence conditions, legislation and codes, ensuring our infrastructure remains safe, reliable and mission‑ready.

  • Lead mechanical building services design (heating, ventilation and air conditioning, steam and condensate, industrial gases, domestic and demineralised water) and produce calculations, specifications and technical notes.
  • Guide optioneering and design reviews (including HAZOPs), providing technical advice as a subject matter expert and maintaining design intent across Babcock‑owned systems.
  • Manage workloads, supervise engineers, and ensure quality, configuration control and compliance with relevant standards and legislation.
  • Coordinate with CAD teams to develop models/drawings, conduct site surveys and monitor works, representing Mechanical Services Technical Authority.
  • Support project delivery—estimating, tender responses and technical analysis—while reporting progress and changes of scope.

This role is full time, 35 hours per week and provides hybrid working arrangements.

Essential experience of the Senior Mechanical Engineer - Building Services

  • Experience in design consultancy or contractor design environments, including leading small teams of engineers.
  • Strong computer literacy with industry‑standard digital tools (e.g., Hevacomp) and the mechanical services design lifecycle.
  • Deep understanding of mechanical engineering principles for building services systems (steam and condensate, HVAC, gases, water services).
  • Detailed knowledge of applicable regulations, legislation and technical standards.
  • Proven quality assurance, documentation and stakeholder coordination across complex facilities.

Qualifications for the Senior Mechanical Engineer - Building Services

  • Degree (or equivalent) in Building Services Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related subject; or NVQ Level 5 in an engineering discipline.
