The role
As a Reactor Chemist, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to national defence, uphold the highest safety standards, and develop your expertise in a dynamic, purpose-driven environment.
Day-to-day, you’ll work across multiple workstreams, from sampling on platforms to conducting critical chemical and radiochemical analyses.
- Performing routine chemical and radiochemical analysis of samples from across the dockyard
- Maintaining UKAS-accredited laboratory standards and calibration of test equipment
- Conducting safety-critical testing of atmospheres for confined space work
- Managing individual projects to develop new analytical methods
- Liaising with multiple teams to provide scientific support and advice
This role is full time, 35 hours per week and is based on site at Devonport Royal Dockyard.
Essential experience of the Reactor Chemist
- Strong understanding of Health and Safety responsibilities in the workplace
- Experience with analytical techniques such as ICP spectroscopy and HPIC
- Knowledge of gamma spectroscopy and liquid scintillation techniques
- Full, clean driving licence
Qualifications for the Reactor Chemist
- Degree in Chemistry or significant experience in a scientific discipline with NVQ Level 4

The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.
