The role
As a Nuclear Compliance Engineer, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. You’ll play a vital role in upholding the highest standards of nuclear safety across one of the UK’s most important defence sites. This is a position with genuine purpose ensuring that nuclear operations remain compliant, safe, and aligned with evolving legislation. Your work will directly support national defence capability, influence future safety standards, and give you the opportunity to develop deep expertise in one of the most regulated and meaningful sectors: defence, aerospace, and engineering.
Day-to-day, you’ll be required to:
- Interpret external regulatory documentation and assess its impact on nuclear licence and authorisation compliance.
- Conduct compliance analyses, identifying gaps and driving actions to achieve the required standards.
- Maintain and develop Licence/Authorisation Condition compliance documentation, including FAIR scoring.
- Provide trusted guidance to stakeholders on nuclear regulatory standards and modern industry practices.
- Support event screening and sentencing, including where events meet (D)INF1 or Schedule 5 thresholds
The role is full time, 35 hours per week.
Core working hours are Monday–Thursday 7:30–15:30 and Friday 07:30–12:30.
Essential experience of the Nuclear Compliance Engineer:
- In‑depth knowledge of nuclear site licence or Ministry of Defence Authorisation Conditions.
- Experience providing authoritative interpretation of nuclear regulatory requirements.
- Proven ability to drive consistent application of regulatory standards.
- Strong analytical and documentation skills.
- Ability to offer independent professional judgement in a highly regulated environment.
Qualifications for the Nuclear Compliance Engineer:
- Professional Auditing qualification.
- NUC1126 Nuclear Regulation and Compliance Training.
- NUC0793/0794 Nuclear Plant Foundation Modules 1 and Nuclear Fundamentals Course Module 2.
- QUAL0002 Submarine Quality Assurance Course.
- Foundation Degree (Level 5) in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline (or equivalent).
- Chartered membership of a relevant professional institute, or ability to demonstrate equivalent professional standing.
Security Clearance
The successful candidate must be a sole UK National who is able to achieve and maintain Naval Nuclear Propulsion Information (NNPPI) security clearance for this role.
