The role

As a Metallurgist, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. The main objective of the Metallurgist is to provide a Metallurgical service across the Royal Navy’s in-service submarine fleet and other MOD assets, ensuring work tasks are delivered safely, on time and to specification.

Day-to-day, you’ll undertake a variety of specialist on-site inspections and laboratory analysis primarily associated with the submarine Nuclear Steam Raising Plant (NSRP) and other systems, in accordance with approved procedures and national/international and MOD standards, as well as:

  • Be a key stakeholder in the acceptance process of welder and weld procedure qualification by carrying out destructive testing/examinations of nuclear and non-nuclear welds
  • Provide technical advice and support to the business on all metallurgical aspects. This involves working closely with teams from Nuclear Standards, Welding, Non-Destructive Examination (NDE), the Technical/Design Authority groups and Naval Staff
  • Produce and approval of documentation, procedures, and inspection reports
  • Rectification of defective components and returning to design intent.

This role is full time and is based on site at Faslane.

Essential experience of the Metallurgist:

  • An understanding of corrosion, material degradation mechanisms and metallurgy.
  • Applying a good attitude is required accompanied with a desire to learn and develop, building on formal education and experience
  • Understanding and communication of complex findings and concepts is paramount to the role, therefore strong verbal and written skills are required
  • Able to apply rigorous engineering and quality standards to each aspect of work, both within the laboratory and aboard naval defence platforms
  • To have good interpersonal skills as you must be able to interact effectively and build relationships with a variety of stakeholders.

Qualifications for the Metallurgist:

  • Degree level in Metallurgy or Materials Engineering/Science, or other relevant discipline. Alternatively an HND/HNC of a relevant discipline accompanied with relevant experience.
  • Professional accreditation (chartered/incorporated) status, or working towards, with relevant professional body (eg IOM3/WeldI).

Security Clearance

The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.
