The role

As a Lifting Equipment Examination and Testing Specialist, you’ll take ownership of written schemes of examination and conduct thorough examinations on lifting appliances and equipment, ensuring they meet statutory requirements and operate safely and reliably. Your impact will be tangible: enabling safe operations, extending asset life, and strengthening the resilience of defence infrastructure — all while growing your expertise in a purpose‑driven environment.

Day-to-day, you’ll have the following responsibilities:

  • Lead the creation and maintenance of written schemes of examination for lifting equipment, aligning with LOLER and PUWER requirements.
  • Carry out thorough examinations and inspections of lifting appliances/accessories, producing clear reports and recommendations.
  • Advise stakeholders on safe systems of work, risk assessments and method statements (RAMS), and COSHH compliance.
  • Support engineering decision‑making on new and existing lifting equipment, providing special engineering input where required.
  • Coordinate resources and collaborate across internal/external teams to maximise section utilisation and deliver safe, on‑time outcomes.

You’ll be working full-time, Monday to Thursday, 36 hours per week. You will be based onsite at Coulport.

Essential experience of the Lifting Equipment Examination & Testing Specialist:

  • Proven knowledge of mechanical systems and equipment.
  • Hands‑on experience with lifting appliances and equipment.
  • Strong understanding of safe systems of work and relevant legislation (e.g., LOLER and PUWER). [hse.gov.uk]
  • Demonstrated leadership and stakeholder collaboration skills.
  • Working knowledge of COSHH and developing RAMS for lifting operations.

Qualifications for the Lifting Equipment Examination & Testing Specialist:

  • Recognised Mechanical Apprenticeship or equivalent qualification.

The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) clearance for this role.
