Keeping complex nuclear facilities safe, secure and mission-ready

At Babcock we’re working to create a safe and secure world, together, and if you join us, you can play your part as a Facility Control Officer at our Devonport Royal Dockyard site.

The role

As a Facility Control Officer, you’ll play a vital governance and safety leadership role at Devonport. Acting as the representative of the Plant Management Group, you’ll be responsible for the safe control, coordination and release of work, including nuclear‑implicated activities, ensuring operations are delivered in line with plant safety cases and regulatory requirements.

Day-to-day, you’ll work closely with project, engineering and operational teams, influencing safe behaviours and supporting the future readiness of one of the UK’s most strategic infrastructure assets. It’s an excellent opportunity to deepen your nuclear facility expertise while building long‑term career progression within defence and engineering.

  • Controlling and coordinating work activities within the facility to ensure safe execution
  • Authorising and supervising nuclear‑implicated work in line with safety cases and procedures
  • Challenging and intervening where necessary to maintain safety standards at all levels
  • Working collaboratively with project, engineering and dockside teams to de‑conflict activities
  • Supporting governance activities and contributing to wider plant and infrastructure management

This role is full time, 35 hours per week and is based on site at Devonport Royal Dockyard.

Please note: the role is expected to transition into a shift‑based position over the next few years, ultimately supporting a 24/7 operational model as programmes evolve.

Essential experience of the Facility Control Officer

  • Experience working within a regulated, safety‑critical or nuclear environment
  • Demonstrable ability to challenge unsafe behaviours and influence safety culture
  • Proven experience acting as a safety leader within operational facilities
  • Strong understanding of controlled work release and permit‑to‑work processes
  • Nuclear submarine or nuclear facility experience is advantageous

Qualifications for the Facility Control Officer

  • NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in an engineering discipline, or demonstrable equivalent experience
  • Nuclear safety or assurance‑related courses are desirable, including nuclear plant or quality training

The successful candidate must be a sole UK National who is able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.
