The role

As an Electrical Design Engineer, you’ll provide professional technical support across Devonport’s complex electrical systems and infrastructure. Sitting within the Technical Authority, your work will help maintain design intent, assure safety, and support the reliable operation of existing and future facilities in a highly regulated environment.

Day-to-day, you’ll apply your electrical engineering expertise to real‑world challenges, influence safe decision‑making, and contribute to long‑term asset health, life‑extension and capability improvement programmes. Alongside this, Babcock offers structured development, mentoring and progression opportunities to help you build a rewarding and sustainable engineering career.

  • Providing technical advice and assurance on existing electrical building services systems
  • Maintaining design configuration, drawings and technical documentation
  • Reviewing technical queries, concessions and defect reports to support safe operation
  • Undertaking surveys and assessments, including asset condition and obsolescence studies
  • Supporting new and modified designs, contributing to upgrades and life‑extension activities

This role is full time, 35 hours per week and is based on site at Devonport Royal Dockyard.

Essential experience of the Electrical Design Engineer

  • Strong understanding of electrical engineering principles and systems
  • Proficient knowledge of IET Wiring Regulations BS 7671
  • Experience producing and interpreting electrical engineering drawings
  • Technical experience in electrical building services
  • Ability to apply engineering judgement in a regulated environment

Qualifications for the Electrical Design Engineer

  • HNC or equivalent qualification in Electrical or Electronic Engineering
  • Candidates not yet meeting all requirements are encouraged to apply; where appropriate, a structured development pathway may be offered, with appointment at trainee level and clear progression opportunities

The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.
