The role

As a Confined Space Coordinator, you’ll be at the heart of our safety operations, ensuring that all confined space activities are carried out to the highest standards. This is a vital role that directly impacts the wellbeing of our teams and the success of our engineering projects. You’ll gain hands-on experience, receive comprehensive training and develop your career in a dynamic and purpose-driven environment.

Day-to-day, you’ll oversee confined space safety operations by maintaining safe systems of work, issuing and cancelling permits, conducting safety checks, responding to hazards and ensuring atmospheric testing and clearance are completed before work begins.

  • Ensuring the Confined Spaces Safe System of Work (SSoW) is in place, maintained, and followed
  • Issuing and cancelling Permits to Work (PTW) for confined spaces
  • Conducting safety checks before issuing permits
  • Withdrawing permits when hazards or non-compliance arise, liaising with teams as needed
  • Confirming atmospheric testing and clearance certificates are completed before work begins

This role is full time, 35 hours per week and is based on site at Devonport Royal Dockyard.

Essential experience of the Confined Space Coordinator

  • Experience working in tanks and confined spaces
  • Proven ability to manage a Safe System of Work
  • Strong understanding of confined space control requirements and standards
  • Confident in enforcing compliance with confined space permits
  • Skilled at working in complex, fast-paced environments and engaging with multiple stakeholders

Qualifications for the Confined Space Coordinator

Desirable (training provided):

  • Confined Space Awareness (HS0415)
  • Management and Supervision of Work in Confined Spaces (HS0143)
  • OPITO Level 1 Authorised Gas Tester (AGT)

Security Clearance

The successful candidate must be a sole UK national who is able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.
