The role

As a Mechanical Engineering Designer, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. Working in a dynamic role across a range of projects within Submarine Support Engineering (SSE), you’ll make a direct and visible impact on the UK’s defence capability, helping to keep the Royal Navy operational, resilient, and mission-ready.

Day-to-day, you’ll be delivering high-quality engineering design outputs primarily within the Waterfront and Design Team, supporting key defence and marine engineering projects.

  • Plan and produce design drawings and technical documentation to support engineering design projects.
  • Develop design, safety, and implementation documentation for engineering solutions, ensuring delivery to required standards and deadlines.
  • Provide guidance on selecting appropriate engineering methods, tools, and technologies for assigned tasks.
  • Participate in design reviews to ensure alignment with design intent throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Conduct platform validation surveys on board submarines to verify and maintain design integrity.

This role is full time, 35 hours per week and provides hybrid working arrangements with 2 days in the office/onsite and 3 days working from home.

Essential experience of the Mechanical Engineering Designer

  • Proven experience in a mechanical engineering environment
  • Skilled in 2D and 3D CAD design, with the ability to produce and interpret technical drawings
  • Strong understanding of mechanical installation and manufacturing requirements
  • Competent in engineering drawing review and quality assurance
  • Familiarity with welding processes and Non-Destructive Examination (NDE) techniques

Qualifications for the Mechanical Engineering Designer

  • Minimum ONC/HNC or Foundation Degree in a relevant engineering discipline, with proven knowledge of design deliverables and demonstrable experience in leading technical teams.

The successful candidate must be a sole UK national who is able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.
